Capoeira is an afro-brazilian type of art that combines elements of martial arts, music and dance. It was born in Brazil by native slaves and slaves that were transported by Africa, specifically from current Angola, somewhere after the sixteenth century.
The participants in a game of Capoeira form a circle (roda), play the traditional musical instruments and sing, while some of them play in pairs inside the circle. The game develops with an alternation of the players, a process that develops in a ritualistic way.
In Athens courses are held at Dance Cultural Centre by Contra Mestre Pepeto, with the support of Cordão de Ouro London and Mestre Poncianinho.

If we go back in the history of Capoeira, we see that, at circumstances it can be a martial art, dance, game or even the three of them. By watching two capoeiristas playing we conclude that sometimes they resemble that they are fighting and some other times that they collaborating. The live music is an integral element of capoeira. This differentiates capoeira considerably from the oriental martial arts that they practise in a stricter atmosphere, with intense the element of discipline and uniformity.
The first written report of capoeira came forth in 1901 from Melo de Morais Filho, in a record of the folklores of Brazil. Capoeira has been developed in two basic forms, Capoeira Angola and Capoeira Regional.
Capoeira Angola resembles the art that was practised by the African slaves, in the plantations of Brazil. Even if it was not created by some specific teacher, the most known teacher that propagated Capoeira was Mestre Pastinha. Mestre Pastinha founded in 1942 in Salvador, the capital of Bahia, an academy in which was taught exclusively Capoeira Angola. In this way he helped with the maintenance of the traditions that were in danger of beeing lost, while a wider public was getting in contact with the art of capoeira.
Capoeira Regional was created by Mestre Bimba in 1920 and is a differentiation of the traditional style of Capoeira Angola. It includes movements of the African martial art batuque but also other movements that Mestre Bimba devised. Mestre Bimba contributed decisively in the propagation of Capoeira, by founding the first academy that was recognized officially by the government of Brazil. He was the first that applied a system of recognition of progress for the students. Also, he imported in capoeira some concatenations of movements at the model of other martial arts.
Two newer forms of capoeira, a development of the older styles, are capoeira contemporanea and miudinhu. 'Contemporanea', that is to say contemporary, we can characterize the styles that have elements of both Capoeira Angola and Regional and have intense the acrobatic element. The style of Miudinhu was devised by Mestre Suassuna, founder of the group Cordao de Ouro. Mestre Suassuna was based on the elements of Capoeira Angola in order to create this new, fast paced style of capoeira.
The capoeira group Cordão de Ouro is one of the most popular capoeira groups in the world. It was founded in 1967, by Mestre Suassuna and Mestre Brasilia in São Paulo, Brasil and its name means 'Belt of Gold'. Courses are held in a sociable and friendly atmosphere that encourages connection and not competition.
The Cordao de Ouro grading system was developed by Mestre Suassuna, and is colour coded. Once a year takes place an event with workshops and a ceremony where students receive their next grade. The day itself is not a test, the belt and level you get is determined by your training frequency and skills you have developed over the year, not just playing capoeira, but other aspects of the art as well, such as music, theory and history. Beginners are especially welcome to take part in the batizado(baptism),to get their first belt.
The art of capoeira will bring to you health, happiness and fitness. In a personal level capoeira will build your confidence, will give you the right balance between body and mind, and you will learn and increase your musicality and rhythm. Capoeira also works as part of a social integration between people of different background, giving you the chance to meet so many different people and become part of a big community that grows each day.
In a more physical way you will do a full body work out, including muscles that you never used before. You will increase your agility, strength and stamina. Fatigue comes mainly trough regular training, but there is an immediate boost to your daily energy levels, your fitness will improve quickly and stress levels will reduce quite rapidly.
